During 2009 and 2010, CSIRO led a project in collaboration with recreational fishers, the fishing tackle industry, scientists and fishery managers in the first attempt to gather scientific information on Australia’s newest “recreational only” species – longtail tuna (Thunnus tonggol).

We are pleased to announce that the project was a success and the final results are now available.

Biology, fisheries and status of longtail tuna (Thunnus tonggol) with special reference to recreational fisheries in Australian Waters

This website will remain active as an important information resource that will be updated periodically when new research information becomes available. The longtail tuna online diary will continue to be available as a personal fishing diary system for fishers (after registering using an email address), where fishing trip details can be stored securely and will remain confidential.

The project team would like to take this opportunity to thank all the recreational fishers who made a valuable contribution to this study by submitting fishing trip information via the website, participating in interviews at fishing tackle stores, and contributing to surveys at boat ramps. With the information collected in this project scientists and fishery managers can now help ensure the long-term sustainability of longtail tuna in Australia.
